Team MGR Racing Wins at California Speedway

Fontana, CA, August 2, 2009. It didn’t take Team MGR Racing too much time to get the most out of their new Ford Fusion ASC Racecar. After the car’s debut at Buttonwillow, team owner Manuel Gil del Real, decided to move the car to Leo Motorsports shop based in Cordes Lakes, AZ for the balance of the season. Under Ralph Byers’ technical expertise, the #27 Fusion, this time sponsored by MGR Consulting Group, showed from the first practice session that it would be hard to beat at the fastest track in ASC Racing’s schedule.

“The car was fantastic right out of the trailer. This is a challenging track with real fast sections around the oval combined with tight first gear hairpins, yet the car was fun to drive all the way around,” said Manuel Gil del Real.

Manuel qualified in 5th place for Saturday’s race after running into traffic during his qualifying run. The top 6 cars were only separated by three tenths of a second. However, after the green flag dropped, Manuel was able to move all the way to first place by turn 3 leading into the infield. From there, he kept his position until the end of the race.

On Sunday, Manuel qualified in 3rd place despite having a problem with the carburetor. After qualifying, it was discovered that a small piece of debris had obstructed the fuel flow at wide open throttle around the oval. By race time, the problem was fixed and the racecar was ready to go. At the green flag, Manuel moved to second place, relentlessly chasing the ST1 Corvette that took the pole earlier in the day. By lap 2 Manuel was bump drafting the Corvette and getting ready to set him up to pass him at the end of the oval. However, the #27 Fusion got too close to one of the infield chicanes, slightly hitting it with the right front fender which caused him to spin at the next turn.

“I think that hit knocked off the alignment of my front right wheel and when I took the next left hander turn, the car pushed quite a bit. When I forced it to turn in, the back end suddenly snapped into oversteer causing the spin…” said Gil del Real after the race.

That put him back in 10th place, however, there was a lot of time left in the race and he took no time to start advancing back through the field. With three laps to go, he was back in fourth place. With one lap to go he was in third place behind the Viper GT-R driven by Mark Alger, Saturday’s pole sitter. They both approached NASCAR turn 1-2 side by side dicing through slower traffic. Manuel went high and Mark went low. At the exit of turn 2 and into the hard braking turn 3, they were back side by side, only this time, a third car that was being lapped would make things much more interesting. The Viper, the Fusion and the lapped car went three-wide through turn 3! This is a turn that is tight even for one car… Somehow, Manuel managed to come ahead into turn 4 regaining his original second place in the process.

From there on, it was just a matter of keeping the car on the track to the finish. The winning Corvette took the checkered flag 10 seconds ahead of Manuel’s Ford Fusion, yet it was Manuel who set the fastest lap of the race with a 1:45.5, just 5 tenths off his qualifying time on Saturday.

“This has been a great weekend for our team. The new partnership with Leo Motorsports and having Ralph Byers back as my Crew Chief have made a world of difference to our program. Now we have a very competitive car for the NASA Championships at Miller Motorsports Park next month,” said Manuel Gil del Real at the end of the weekend.

Team MGR Racing Debuts New Car at Buttonwillow Raceway Park

Buttonwillow, CA, May 17, 2009. Team MGR Racing – WOT Performance tested the new car under race conditions for the first time at ASC Racing’s second event of the season at Buttonwillow Raceway Park. Although some last final adjustments to the car prevented the team from taking advantage of Friday’s open test sessions, the new racecar passed tech inspection and was ready to compete on Saturday morning.

Manuel Gil del Real sat for the first time behind the wheel of the new Ford Fusion ASC Unlimited car during Saturday’s early morning practice session. With a lap just 4 seconds off the leaders’ pace, he was very encouraged with the way the car handled on the twisty racetrack configuration. “Frankly, the first time you test a new car you want to build speed little by little to make sure that everything is fine. I only drove the car about 75% of its potential but I could already see that it is going to be a fast racecar once we get it sorted out,” said Gil del Real after the session.

With Pete Andreas and Ralph Byers, the team’s crew, working 12 hr days all weekend, the WOT Performance Ford Fusion became progressively faster over the weekend. On Sunday’s qualifying session, Manuel Gil del Real was able to qualify in fourth place, just one second behind the leading ASC contender. During the race, recorded what ended up being his fastest lap of the weekend, this time just 0.6 seconds off the ASC winning car. Unfortunately, while it was running in third place, an engine failure prevented the 27 Ford Fusion from finishing the race.

“Aside from the engine failure at the end, which we still need to look into, I am very encouraged with the progress that we’ve made this weekend. Both Pete and Ralph have done a terrific job getting the car in race shape and making all the necessary adjustments over the weekend in extremely hot and humid conditions. We have a fast car and it’s just going to get faster as we get ready for our next race,” said Manuel Gil del Real.

The team’s next event will be at California Speedway, the famous NASCAR track, on July 31-August 2. For more information, please visit http://www.mgrracing.net/ or http://www.wotperformance.com/

Team MGR Racing – WOT Performance Celebrates Championship Season in Las Vegas Finale

Las Vegas, NV October 14, 2007)

After clinching the ASC Racing Unlimited Class Championship at Laguna Seca in Monterey, CA two weeks ago, Team MGR Racing – WOT Performance approached the season finale in Las Vegas much more relaxed than in previous seasons when championship points were still at stake.

"It sure helps to wrap the championship with one race to go... last year at this time we were fighting very hard just to finish third in the points..." said MGR Racing Team Owner and lead driver Manuel Gil del Real.

Indeed, this season has been one of the most contested ones in ASC Racing history. This is the first year that this racing series has kept points for the new "Unlimited" class seeing racecars with as much as 700 horsepower negotiating high speed corners around seven different road courses in three states.

Team MGR Racing - WOT Performance, also partnering for the first time this season, has traveled more than 6,000 miles since the season started in Phoenix back in February. Their newly earned accolades are worth every mile spent on the road. The #27 Ford Taurus with Gil del Real behind the wheel, entered fourteen races accumulating six wins, seven poles, and seven fast laps at racetracks as varied in layout and setup requirements as Willow Springs, California Speedway, Buttonwillow, and Las Vegas Motor Speedway; a true display of the Team's ability to adapt and perform at the top level throughout the season.

The Team's debut in the new Unlimited class has also come at a high cost. "This is also the first time that we have needed three engines to complete the season. We have definitely learned that lesson too and our goal is to come back next season with a new engine program that will allow us to keep a single engine for the entire season," said Pete Andreas the Team's Technical Director.

"Right now, I think both Pete (Andreas) and I are really looking forward to the off season. It's been really hard for both of us to keep up with our race program the last couple of months but we also wanted to win the Championship more than anything else! Now we can sit back and take some time off before we start planning out our strategy for next season," added Manuel Gil del Real.

Team MGR Racing – WOT Performance would like to thank Perma Cool, Trinity Mufflers, and Ghaster Painting & Coatings, for their support throughout the season. We also want to thank the hundreds of fans in the US, Europe and beyond that have followed the Team's performance this year.

Team MGR Racing-WOT Performance Secures ASC Unlimited Championship at Laguna Seca

Monterey, CA (September 30, 2007) - A third place finish on Sunday’s ASC Race at Laguna Seca was enough for Team MGR Racing-WOT Performance to secure their first ASC Unlimited Championship with two races still remaining in the season.

This event at the renowned Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, CA was marked on every team’s calendar as one of the most significant of the season. Not only was this the first time ever that ASC Racing has competed at Laguna Seca, but this particular 11-turn road course is one of the most challenging and difficult to master for any driver coming from any series.

"It didn’t help that I went off course in the middle of the first and only practice session and got stuck in the gravel at the exit of turn five and unable to bring the car back to the track..." said Manuel Gil del Real. That off course incident also resulted in a broken oil line and after being pulled out of the gravel by a tow vehicle, the #27 WOT Performance Ford Taurus limped to the garage for quick repairs. Pete Andreas, the team’s Technical Director, once again saved the weekend and had the WOT sponsored machine ready to go just in time for the next qualifying session.

Gil del Real still managed to qualify with the fourth fastest time among all the ASC competitors with a 1:36.861 lap time around the 2.4 mile track. However with no more practice time available on the schedule the team had serious questions about how the car setup would hold up over a longer stint. While qualifying took place in the afternoon under warm temperatures, the race would not be until the following morning. To make matters more complicated, a heavy rain shower overnight washed off all the rubber from the circuit just before race time.

"It was a little frustrating because normally we have a short warm up session before we go racing that allows us to make minor adjustments. In this case, we knew the car set up was not quite right. The car was a bit tight but we opted to stick with a known condition rather than making a change that might make it worse," said Andreas before the race.

All in all, the MGR-Racing-WOT Performance team was well aware that they did not have a winning car this weekend. Laguna Seca is not the type of track where you can just compromise with the setup. At the beginning of Sunday’s race, the #27 Ford was able to move up a few positions but after a few laps, it became evident that going fast around the corners of this historic track was getting more and more challenging for the WOT machine. A third place finish is the best they could achieve, not a bad result, yet not good enough for this team’s high standards. "We have our season finale in Las Vegas in less than two weeks. This third place clinches the Championship for us and it also allows us to approach the Las Vegas races in a much more relaxed way. Now we are ready to do just that..." summed up Manuel Gil del Real.

Team MGR Racing - WOT Performance will now prepare for the final round of the ASC Racing season at Las Vegas Motorspeedway Outfield Road Course on October 12-14, 2007. For more information about the Team’s schedule, please visit www.mgrracing.net or http://www.wotperformance.com/.

Double Win for Team MGR Racing-WOT Performance

BUTTONWILLOW, Calif.(September 1, 2007) – After the mechanical failure suffered at Thunderhill last month, Team MGR Racing-WOT Performance took no time to rebound to the top at Buttonwillow Raceway Park.

The weekend however presented a new set of challenges to the Phoenix based team. With a new engine that was installed in the #27 WOT Performance Ford Taurus just a couple of days prior to the race weekend, Manuel Gil del Real tested it for the first time on Friday afternoon. With ambient temperature in the 110 degree range, the car started overheating right away and the oil pressure dropped below comfortable levels. Both, Pete Andreas, Team Technical Director and Manuel were seriously concerned about how to handle the extreme heat the rest of the weekend.

On Saturday, Manuel drove a very conservative qualifying session placing him in fifth place overall. "I know I can go at least a couple of seconds quicker... I just want to save the engine for the race and see how things go from there..." said Manuel after qualifying. In fact, at the drop of the green flag, it took Manuel a few hundred feet to move from fifth to third place. By turn one, he was right behind Michael Arnheiter and studying the best place to pass him for second place. That would happen only a lap later when Manuel went inside Michael's car under braking just before the "Grapevine" turn.

The race literally heated up and a roll over crash by another competitor caused it to be halted for several minutes. "That was the worst time I've had inside a racecar. Seating strapped in the car with the cockpit temperature at around 150 degrees and all the metal surfaces inside the car at nearly 200 degrees, with no airflow at all, it was unbearable! I was about to walk out of my car..." said Manuel Gil del Real after the race. However, the race was re-started a few minutes later and all drivers went back to race action. At the end of the race, the WOT Performance Ford secured a second place overall and a win in the ASC-Unlimited class, the first of the two wins it would achieve this weekend.

After Saturday's success, and based on the fact that Sunday's race would take place in the morning with cooler temperatures, Pete Andreas decided to tune the engine of the WOT Performance Ford a little more aggressively. It took Manuel Gil del Real only one lap to qualify second overall and first in ASC Unlimited. "I told Pete after qualifying that we would win the race. I'm actually surprised that I qualified up front since I only drove the car at about 85% during the qualifying lap," said Manuel Gil del Real.

At the start of Sunday's race, Manuel got his car just ahead of Bryan Hintz –who qualified on the pole- as they both approached turn one's right hander, however, not quite enough to shut the door on the #13 Chevrolet. Two laps later, the WOT Performance Ford was able to get past the #13 of Bryan Hintz at full speed just as they both entered "Riverside" turn at around 140 mph. But the real battle for the lead was about to start when Robert Davis –who won Saturday's race and considers Buttonwillow his home track- also got past Bryan Hintz and started a hot pursuit of the #27 Ford. "I saw that Robert passed Bryan too and I figured he would get behind me real quick, but I wasn't overly concerned about him passing me. Then, I ran a bit wide at the end of the esses and that's all it took for him to slip by... still I was able to pass him back the following lap and from there on, we had a real good and competitive time racing side-by-side several times," said Gil del Real.

The fight for first place ended when Davis lost fourth gear with two laps to go and left Manuel Gil del Real easily taking the overall ASC win and his second ASC-Unlimited win of the weekend. "This has been a great weekend for our team," said Pete Andreas, Team's Technical Director. "We've been working very hard at the shop since we came back from Thunderhill testing different engine platforms and working different problems until we came up with the solution just about two days before coming to the track. I'm really glad that all our effort has paid off and we've come up with two wins."

Team MGR Racing - WOT Performance will now prepare for round six of the ASC Racing season at Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, CA on September 28-30, 2007. For more information about the Team's schedule, please visit http://www.mgrracing.net/ or http://www.wotperformance.com/.

Mechanical Problems Affect Team MGR Racing-WOT Performance at Thunderhill Raceway.

WILLOWS, Calif. (July 15, 2007) – Team MGR Racing-WOT Performance made its first stop of 2007 in Northern California over the weekend, joining the rest of the ASC Racing teams at the Sports Car Club of America's San Francisco Region for their Sizzling Summer Regional event at Thunderhill Raceway.

Right from the beginning of Friday’s test sessions, the #27 WOT Performance Ford Taurus driven by Manuel Gil del Real and prepared by Pete Andreas was on top of the time sheets around the 2.9 mile road course in Willows, California. However, during Saturday’s qualifying session, Gil del Real couldn’t quite find the clear track that he needed to set a fast time and found himself relegated to a 12th place start. “It is really frustrating how some drivers still think that they are supposed to race each other during qualifying. I was behind two GT-1 cars for two laps and the two guys would just not look at their mirrors,” said Gil del Real clearly upset about the situation.

Unfortunately, due to the large car counts in the San Francisco Region, qualifying was the only event held on Saturday, and both races to be contested on Sunday would pre-grid based on Saturday’s qualifying results. At the start of the first race, Gil del Real moved quickly from the sixth row all the way to the top five. Just before entering turn 1, Carl Stein in the GT-1 #88 car overshot his braking and slid over making contact with the #27 Ford and sending Gil del Real into a slow spin. For a moment it looked like the WOT Performance car would recover from it, but Fred Lind, also competing in the ASC-U group, while trying to avoid Gil del Real’s now sideways car, made slight contact to his left rear to accelerate his spin. Gil del Real fell back to last place in the 23-car field. He worked himself up to 14th with body panels flapping on his left side creating a bad push condition. However, the damage from the accident finally forced him to retire his car from the event on lap seven.

“Manuel made a great start… he had a pole car and naturally, he wanted to get up front as soon as possible… and it worked until the GT-1 car ran into us. Despite all our body damage after that, our #27 Ford still set the fast lap of 1:56.04, quicker than all other ASC competitors so we know we have something positive to look forward to for the second race today,” said Pete Andreas after the first race.

With only three hours to repair the car, Andreas wasted no time to get started. The entire left side of the car had to be repaired and re-attached to the car, along with the front bumper and radiator airbox. Still, the car was back in race ready condition in just a couple of hours proving WOT Performance’s experience in race car fabrication.

In a replay from the earlier race, the afternoon event again had Gil del Real starting from the sixth row. But this time he was more patient and decided to let the field sort out itself through the first corner rather repeating the earlier scene. From twelfth place, the WOT Performance Ford started carving through the field lap after lap. Stein, D. Arnheiter, Ochylski, Hartman, Glowniak,… all saw their mirrors filled by the Ford Taurus only to see it go by with not much to do about it.

Now running in 5th place overall, Gil del Real had his eyes set on the #25 of Michael Arnheiter who was now within striking distance… but this wasn’t a weekend meant to be easy on the Phoenix based team. “All of a sudden, the car developed a nasty drivetrain vibration under acceleration… I radioed Pete to let him know about it and shortly after my oil pressure gauge read zero! I had no choice but to coast back to the pits to avoid further engine damage,” said Gil del Real. Once again, Gil del Real scored the fast lap of all the ASC entrants while unable to finish the race.

Team MGR Racing - WOT Performance will now prepare for round five of the ASC Racing season at Buttonwillow Raceway Park on September 1-2, 2007. For more information about the Team’s schedule, please visit http://www.mgrracing.net/ or http://www.wotperformance.com/.

Team MGR Racing – WOT Performance Dominates at California Speedway

Fontana, CA, June 10, 2007. Team MGR Racing – WOT Performance earned its second win of the season at California Speedway during SCCA’s Double Regional event. The #27 WOT Performance Ford Taurus driven by Manuel Gil del Real and prepared by Pete Andreas owner of WOT Performance was truly unbeatable this weekend. From practice sessions to qualifying and racing, the WOT Ford stayed consistently on top of the time sheets.

“Qualifying was very tough on Saturday. We had 64 cars trying to qualify in a short 15 minute session and the amount of traffic was incredible. I was about to come in when Pete came in on the radio and told me that I would have a clean lap if I just passed a group of cars ahead. I did just that, and that’s what put as on the pole for that race,” said Gil del Real after the qualifying session.

Gil del Real went on to lead Saturday’s race, but unfortunately, a miscalculation in the amount of fuel needed to complete the distance caused his Ford to run out of fuel with only two laps to go. This would be the only low spot for the MGR Racing – WOT Performance Team during an otherwise perfect weekend.

After numerous close calls while negotiating lapped traffic on Saturday’s race, on Sunday, SCCA’s Race Director decided to allow the ASC Racing teams to qualify and race in a separate group. Not only did the racing become safer but the lap times for all ASC competitors immediately came down. Once again, MGR Racing-WOT Performance ended up taking the pole for Sunday’s race with a 1:45.732 which also ended up being the fastest lap of the weekend.

From the drop of the green flag, Gil del Real took the lead and except for a brief side-by-side racing through turns one and two of the speedway with Lind, he remained in the lead all the way to the checkered flag. The WOT Ford’s pace was so amazing, that by the end of the race it had built a 20 second gap over Jeff Glowniak’s #34 Chevy Montecarlo who finished in second place.

“We knew we had a fast car and had it not been for Saturday’s mistake, we should have left Fontana with two poles and two wins. Nevertheless, this is a fantastic result for us. Pole, fast lap and race win! This is WOT Performance’s home track and we are very proud of our results this weekend,” said Pete Andreas, Crew Chief of the #27 Ford and owner of WOT Performance in nearby Riverside, CA.

Team MGR Racing - WOT Performance will now prepare for round three of the ASC Racing season at Thunderhill Raceway on July 14, 2007. For more information about the Team’s schedule, please visit http://www.mgrracing.net/ or http://www.wotperformance.com/.

Team MGR Racing-WOT Performance Gets Its First Win at Willow Springs

Phoenix, AZ, March 26, 2007. The new partnership between Team MGR Racing and WOT Performance couldn’t have started in a more successful way. The WOT Performance sponsored #27 Ford Taurus with Manuel Gil del Real at the wheel took the overall ASC Racing win at Willow Springs on Sunday during SCCA’s Cal Club Double Regional event.

But that wasn’t the only WOT Performance racecar at the event. The weekend started with Pete Andreas driving the #11 Chevy Montecarlo around the 2.5 mile Willow Springs track. Despite having flu like symptoms all day and being the first time that Pete took his own racecar for a test, he showed great driving ability with lap times just 7 seconds or around 5% off the other ASC competitors’ pace. Pete plans to continue getting as much valuable seat time as possible with the goal of entering a few races in the second half of the season.

On Saturday morning it was Manuel Gil del Real’s turn to get behind the wheel and test the Ford Taurus for the race weekend. In only his fourth practice lap and with old practice tires turned a lap in the 1:27 range, about two seconds faster than most ASC lap times from Friday’s tests. The Cal Club event had a great turn out which resulted in more than 30 racecars trying to qualify in a short 15 minute window.

Traffic prevented Gil del Real from getting a clean lap and as a result, he started Saturday’s race in twelfth place. The WOT Performance Ford had no trouble working its way through traffic once the race started. By the fifth lap, Gil del Real had already moved to fifth place overall. “At that point, I started to push it as much as I could. My left front tire was down to the cords and I had the 62 (David Arnheiter) right at my bumper, but I really wanted to get a podium finish for me and for Pete (Andreas, owner of WOT Performance),” said Gil del Real after the race. Although Gil del Real crossed the checkered flag in fourth place, a later disqualification of Michael Arnheiter when his car didn’t pass post race weight, moved the #27 WOT Performance Ford to third place in ASC and First place in the ASC Unlimited class.

Manuel had a better run on Sunday’s qualifying session and qualified his car in fourth place overall. The start of the race was relatively clean with the top four cars opening a significant gap over the rest of the field behind them. On lap 6, Robert Davis who had just turned the fastest ASC lap of the weekend, span while approaching turn three. That allowed Manuel to move up to third place behind a Super Production Dodge Viper and Kevin O’Connell’s ASC car. O’Connell’s tires started to go away from mid race on and on lap 17, he went off track while exiting the off camber left hander turn five.

“I was just cruising along not even thinking that I could catch the 59, however, when I saw him going off, I knew his tires would have collected a lot of dirt and I had to try and get ahead of him as quickly as possible,” said Gil del Real. O’Connell was able to recover and get back on track just ahead of the MGR Racing-WOT Performance Ford. The two went side-by-side through the majority of turn eight and into turn nine. Gil del Real came out of nine and into the main straight just behind O’Connell and drafted behind him until the last 100 feet, when he pulled along side and braked hard into turn one to take the lead. From that point on, O’Connell’s worn out tires prevented him from matching Gil del Real’s pace.

In the end, the #27 MGR Racing-WOT Performance Ford Taurus stayed ahead the last five laps to take the overall ASC win and add Willow Springs to their winning resume. “This was a great race and overall weekend for our newly formed partnership. This is the first time a WOT Performance car has been in Victory Lane since we joined ASC Racing last year… and for sure I’m confident that it will just be the first one of many more to come!” said an exuberant Pete Andreas.

The team’s next race will be at Altamont Motorsports Park on May 4-5, 2007. For more information, please visit http://www.mgrracing.net/ and http://www.wotperformance.com/.
