Team MGR Racing – WOT Performance Dominates at California Speedway

“Qualifying was very tough on Saturday. We had 64 cars trying to qualify in a short 15 minute session and the amount of traffic was incredible. I was about to come in when Pete came in on the radio and told me that I would have a clean lap if I just passed a group of cars ahead. I did just that, and that’s what put as on the pole for that race,” said Gil del Real after the qualifying session.
Gil del Real went on to lead Saturday’s race, but unfortunately, a miscalculation in the amount of fuel needed to complete the distance caused his Ford to run out of fuel with only two laps to go. This would be the only low spot for the MGR Racing – WOT Performance Team during an otherwise perfect weekend.
After numerous close calls while negotiating lapped traffic on Saturday’s race, on Sunday, SCCA’s Race Director decided to allow the ASC Racing teams to qualify and race in a separate group. Not only did the racing become safer but the lap times for all ASC competitors immediately came down. Once again, MGR Racing-WOT Performance ended up taking the pole for Sunday’s race with a 1:45.732 which also ended up being the fastest lap of the weekend.
From the drop of the green flag, Gil del Real took the lead and except for a brief side-by-side racing through turns one and two of the speedway with Lind, he remained in the lead all the way to the checkered flag. The WOT Ford’s pace was so amazing, that by the end of the race it had built a 20 second gap over Jeff Glowniak’s #34 Chevy Montecarlo who finished in second place.
“We knew we had a fast car and had it not been for Saturday’s mistake, we should have left Fontana with two poles and two wins. Nevertheless, this is a fantastic result for us. Pole, fast lap and race win! This is WOT Performance’s home track and we are very proud of our results this weekend,” said Pete Andreas, Crew Chief of the #27 Ford and owner of WOT Performance in nearby Riverside, CA.
