A Letter from Rob Rucker -ASC Race Director
Well, I hope everyone has been enjoying their time off. It seems that no matter what series you race in, you always have a spot on the schedule where you race back-to-back and then follow it up with a long lay off.
I realize that this season is just starting to heat up, but I've taken the break as an opportunity to start working on some things for next year. So I thought I would take a moment and bring everyone up to speed. I hope you find it as exciting as I do.
First off, I've been in contact with a couple of different track promoters about running some exhibition races at their tracks in 2007. It seemed that every driver that I have spoken with has expressed some interest in running on a circle track. So I contacted the Collins family, in charge of the new Kern County half-mile track, and they said they would be very interested in having us race at their new, state-of-the-art facility (if it gets built). I also spoke with Kenny Shepard, the promoter at Altamont Motorsports Park. Mr. Shepard would love to have us come try out their new mini road course which is situated completely in front of the 6,000-seat grandstands. We could race on a Saturday night as part of their weekly program, allowing us to be covered by their insurance and being eligible for prize money. The only entry fee would be our back-gate admission which usually runs about $35-$45 per team member. I believe that both of those tracks would allow us to showcase
ourselves in front of some real race fans and hopefully get a few more circle-trackers interested in our road-racing series.
Another avenue I've been running down is looking to get more money into our contingency fund. I have spoken with a couple of representatives regarding the use of their products which would boost our point fund. Everything is currently in the preliminary stage, but as soon as I begin to get firm confirmations, I'll relay the information. Finally, I've made plans to attend the national promoters conference this December in Reno. The opportunity to discuss our series in front of a national array of product representatives and track promoters can only strengthen what we already know is a great thing
Perhaps you can see why I'm so excited about next year. But we can't forget about the great things that are still to come this year. Ken Stinnett has turned his six wins into a large lead for the 2006 ASC Championship title, but fifth-place driver Manuel Gil del Real is only 57 points behind Belinda Endress who's in second. Sandwiched in between them are Mike Arnheiter and Dennis Hannel. So every point down the stretch is going to count.
Unfortunately, after the series' return trip to ThunderHill in August, we'll have yet another lay off until we make the first of two trips over the final three months to Phoenix International Raceway in October. Rumor has it there are a few Phoenix-area locals that may come out to give the ASC regulars a run for their money.
As you can see, there is a lot of exciting racing on the horizon for the ASC. I can't wait to see you all at the track.
