ASC Schedule Change

As expected, the American Stock Car Challenge Series has announced schedule changes affecting the rest of the 2006 season. The new schedule will be as follows:

August 12-13: Thunderhill Raceway Park
October 14-15: Phoenix Int'l Raceway
November: Date and Venue TBA
December 9-10: Phoenix Int'l Raceway

The only date that is still undetermined is in November. ASC Teams will make a decision during the next ASC event at Thunderhill in August. It appears that Firebird Raceway in Phoenix and Thunderhill are the two options that are available for November. Buttonwillow has been eliminated as an option due to scheduling conflicts with NASA's SoCal Region.

The final decision for the November race will be made in August while all ASC teams get together again at Thunderhill.

Team MGR Racing Drops Mid-Ohio Race from Schedule

In anticipation of ASC's announcement regarding the race schedule for the rest of the season, Team MGR Racing has decided to drop the NASA Championships race at Mid-Ohio from this season's schedule.

"It didn't make any financial sense for us to travel to Mid-Ohio in September if no significant ASC contingency will be there" says Manuel Gil del Real, team owner. "Most of the drivers and teams that I've spoken with are not planning on going to Mid-Ohio, so rather than keeping the date posted, we've decided to take it out of our schedule."

Team MGR Racing is still waiting for ASC's official announcement regarding the rest of the dates for this season. As soon as the new schedule is finalized, it will be posted on www.MGRRacing.net

ASC to Announce Schedule Changes

ASC has announced that it will make some scheduling changes for the remaining of the season. Although the upcoming race at Thunderhill on August 12-13 seems to be a firm date, the rest of the race venues and dates may be changed.

Sources close to MGR Racing have confirmed that the race at Infineon Raceway in October may be replaced with a new date, possibly at Buttonwillow. A large number of ASC cars had trouble passing the strict noise level restrictions at Infineon during their April event there.

MGR Racing will publish the new schedule as soon as it is made available by ASC Racing. Please visit www.MGRRacing.com for the latest information.

Karts Replace Stockcars During the Summer Break

With the next race in the ASC calendar still 8 weeks away, Manuel Gil del Real continues honing his skills driving his shifter Kart at the local PKRA track.

"Kart racing is truly amazing" says Manuel. "It is by far the best type of training that any driver can do in between races or during the off season."

Indeed with speeds approaching 100mph in just a 500ft straight and shifting around 20 times per lap in a 46 second lap, Karting is one of the most demanding forms of motorsports that any professional or amateur driver can try.

"I love Karting. You can rest assured that any weekend I'm not racing with ASC I will be spending an entire morning training with my Go Kart until I have no tires left!" says Manuel.

Team MGR Racing Moves to Fifth Place After Buttonwillow Races

Phoenix, AZ, June 12, 2006. Team MGR Racing's first stop of the season at Buttonwillow Raceway Park brought the Team two solid fourth place finishes. The weekend however, was once again a test of character and determination for the Team.

During Friday testing the #27 Symbolic Ford did not handle as well as expected. The car did not seem to respond very much to setup changes. In a final attempt to record a fast lap for the day, Manuel Gil del Real lost control of the car at the exit of the final turn and ended up sliding backwards into the tire wall. Although the damage to the car's back end was mostly cosmetic, it effectively ended a bad practice day. Ralph Byers -Crew Chief for Manuel- who had also been fighting a stomach virus all day, wasted no time after the incident and had the car back in race condition just a couple of hours later.

Due to a delay in the race schedule, Saturday's qualifying was reduced to 3 laps. Running into traffic during the third and "hot" lap, Manuel had to settle for seventh place at the start of Saturday's race. With outside temperatures in the 100 degree range, getting the tires to perform turned out to be quite a challenge. Buttonwillow's race starts are some of the most eventful for ASC drivers. Seeing racecars take a sharp right turn at the end of a long straight with cold tires, cold brakes and cars going three and four wide, makes it for a great spectacle... or debacle. This time though, everyone seemed to make it through unharmed.

Half way through the race, Manuel Gil del Real had moved up to fourth place. It was at this point when Jeff Glowniak in the #34 came up along side the #27 going through Riverside turn. Unable to make the #34 stick through this fast left hand turn, Glowniak's car leaned on the #27 just enough to push Manuel Gil del Real into a spin. Although the #27 was able to get back on course right away, the illegal move had moved Manuel Gil del Real back to fifth place. It was at the conclusion of the race that Race Control penalized Glowniak for making avoidable contact, and Manuel Gil del Real was reinstated with a fourth place finish. Up front, Ken Stinnett won the race followed by Robert Davis and Mike Arnheiter.

Still not satisfied with the Symbolic Ford's handling, Ralph Byers kept experimenting with the setup. By Sunday's morning warm up session, despite being on old practice tires, Manuel was able to turn a lap time over a second faster than his fastest race lap the day before. Just when things started to look brighter for Team MGR, Manuel learned that he would also start the qualifying race from the pole thanks to inverting the top four finishers from Saturday's race. "Now we have a fast car and a pole position!" said an exuberant Manuel to Ralph.

The short qualifying race once again proved to be as exciting as costly for most of the ASC teams. Manuel had a great start and by the time he approached the critical turn one right hander, he was clear of the second and third place cars to be able to turn in clean in first place and not side-by-side. But this is Buttonwillow and this track always finds a way to make things more interesting. Manuel turned in but the car did not respond. Now with the front brakes locked up and the ASC freight train going by him, he found himself driving through the dirt outside of turn one before he was able to get back on track and running in last place.

While wondering what happened or why the car understeered so severely, the #27 kept charging from the back trying to advance as many positions as possible. It wasn't until later in the first lap at the exit of the "Bus Stop" chicane, when several other cars made contact. This time, Manuel was able to thread his car through the various cars spinning in front of him and gain four positions in the process. Now running in fourth place with one lap to go, the #99 of Belinda Endress came up behind him. Just before the final turn leading into the front straight, Belinda hit the back of Manuel's car getting him loose. Manuel was able to recover and still cross the checkered flag in fourth place. Ralph Byers, however, was not so happy about having to repair the back bumper area of the car one more time thanks to the #99's unrealistic last second pass attempt.

The question remained as to why the car's handling went away after the earlier morning practice. Ralph started to check again every chassis and suspension component looking for possible causes. It turned out that the front suspension left lower control arm mounting point was loose as a result of a broken weld. In other words, there was not much resistance from the left front tire when the car was turning or braking.

The start of Sunday's race proved once again that at Buttonwillow, making it through turn one at the start of the race should be part of the victory celebration. Robert Davis started from the pole and took the lead right away. However, the Arnheiter brothers (Mike and David) running in second and third place respectively, had contact going into the turn. This resulted in David's #62 car spinning right in front of Manuel Gil del Real's #27, who had no choice but to go wide and take the turn through the dirt one more time. All other cars made it through including Mike Arnheiter who was able to rejoin the race. David was not so fortunate though as his car ended up against the inside tire barrier and his race was over.

After a couple of laps behind the pace car to clean up the track the race resumed. The #27 Symbolic Ford was now running in sixth place in a close battle with the #87 driven by Scott Ivie. Although Gil del Real was quicker in most sections, he did not have quite the speed to make a clean pass. "Stay with him, keep trying, keep trying" said Ralph to Manuel on the radio. With three laps to go, Manuel's persistence paid off. Exiting Riverside and going into the Bus Stop chicane, Scott Ivie's car went into a spin allowing Manuel to go by. Although Michael Arnheiter was now behind Manuel, at this stage of the race he did not have enough grip left to stay close enough to attempt a pass. Robert Davis went on take first place followed by Belinda Endress, Ken Stinnett (with severe brake problems) and Manuel Gil del Real finishing in fourth place.

After Buttonwillow results, Team MGR Racing moves from seventh to fifth place in the overall standings. The next race for the team is scheduled to be at Thunderhill Raceway Park on August 12-13, 2006. For more information, be sure to visit www.MGRRacing.net

Team MGR Racing Learns from Thunderhill Experience

Phoenix, AZ, May 29, 2006. The first trip to Thunderhill Park ended up being much more eventful than expected for Team MGR Racing. After a long road trip from Phoenix to Willows, CA, Manuel Gil del Real and his Crew Chief, Ralph Byers, had just about enough energy left to leave the Team's transporter at the track and head back to the hotel to rest as much as possible before Friday's practice sessions.

Friday's weather was perfect for all the ASC teams that decided to take advantage of TrackMasters’ Racing event to test and tune their racecars around the 3-mile Thunderhill Park road course. Despite being Team MGR's first appearance at this racetrack, by the end of Friday's practice sessions Manuel's lap times were among the top five for the day. Everything was looking great for the race weekend at that point.

Saturday's qualifying under new rules had all the teams on sticker tires trying to get their fastest lap time in a short 15-minute session. At the end of qualifying, the #27 Symbolic Ford Taurus ended up in seventh place. "The car just didn't seem to have enough traction out of the corners. I had too much wheel spin under power coming out of the turns..." said Manuel Gil del Real to his Crew Chief Ralph Byers as he climbed out of his car. Ralph recognized the situation and immediately made chassis adjustments to correct it for the race.

At the start of the race, Manuel had a good start. He moved from seventh to fifth in the first two corners. By lap two, he passed the #99 driven by Belinda Endress at the end of the straight, moving him up to fourth place and closing in on the top three cars. However, while going through the downhill, off camber exit in turn five, Manuel lost control of the car and ended up spinning out into the infield. Luckily, the car was undamaged, however, by the time Manuel was able to get back on track he was back in last place. Resolving to regain as many positions as possible, Ralph kept Manuel informed on radio as he worked his way up through the field.

Ralph's spotting abilities proved to be crucial as Manuel once again found himself taking an evasive maneuver through the grassy infield while exiting turn five, this time to avoid two cars that had just spun out right in front of him. With just a few laps to go, all Manuel could do was pass the #94 car of Dennis Hannel to get back to seventh place, the position he maintained until the end of the race. "It all seemed like a lot of hard work to finish the same way we started!" said Manuel at the end of the race while waiting for the post race tech inspection. At that point Ralph pointed at the left rear tire that was completely flat and to the ground. "If after all the race incidents and having a tire losing air in the last laps we still managed to finish where we started, I think we should be proud of our accomplishment," said the ever-encouraging Ralph.

On Sunday, seven turned out to be the lucky number as that was the number of drivers' positions that would invert for the start of the short qualifying race. Yes, after all the misfortunes the day before, the #27 Symbolic Ford Taurus was now on the pole and ready to race. Scheduled to be only six laps long and with the top finishers from Saturday starting from the back, this race promised to be as good as it gets. Manuel led the field to the green flag, at which point he rocketed his car to secure his first place. In the meantime, behind him the rest of the field was fighting hard to gain or maintain their positions. Ken Stinnett worked his way up to the front by lap two. "Stinnett is coming up behind you," Ralph said to Manuel. But Manuel felt comfortable controlling the pace from corner to corner... until turn 11, that is. Just as Manuel exited turn 11, Stinnett tapped the left side of his rear bumper sending the #27 car into a spin and leaving him facing backwards in the middle of the track. Turn 12 is a fairly slow corner and the tight field managed to squeeze by without hitting Manuel's car. Yet, for all racing purposes, Manuel's qualifying race was over. Stinnett, clearly at fault, later apologized to Manuel at the end of the race. Nevertheless, Manuel would have to start Sunday's main race in 9th place.

As it had been the case throughout the weekend, the #27 Symbolic Ford handled great at the beginning of the race. Despite starting in ninth place, Manuel moved up to sixth by turn two. He went side-by-side with the #26 driven by rookie driver Greg Nutting through turn two, into three, and uphill through turn four. At this point, Manuel had positioned his car just where he wanted it to be -inside of turn four - to be on the outside going over the hill. The #26 and #27 cars came up over the hill still side-by-side, however the #26 driver did not back off despite being on the wrong side of the road at that time. The result was as predictable as inevitable. Nutting's car bounced left as it became slightly airborne over the hill using Manuel's car as the retaining wall. Manuel's car was hit hard and pushed off track with a hole in the left side of the bumper and a bent hood. Nutting was able to continue although he later retired after going off course two more times.

Despite being in last place with a damaged car and a bent hood limiting the car's aerodynamics and Manuel's visibility, Team MGR wasn't about to quit. "Ralph, I'm going to need you to tell me what's ahead of me because I can't see much in here," Manuel said to Ralph on the radio. Racing for pride more than for position, Manuel adapted to the car's deficient handling and found motivation in improving his lap times lap after lap. "1.59, 1.58, 1.57, Great job!!" Ralph said to Manuel every time he passed the start-finish line. Not bad for a car with a hole on the right side of the front bumper, a bent hood and a driver that can't see the road ahead. But that's what racing is all about. In the end, the Symbolic Ford ended Sunday's race in seventh place, still two positions ahead of where it started. They say warriors heal faster than average persons. Team MGR Racing will prove that during the next race at Buttonwillow Raceway Park on June 10-11, 2006.
